UGL is Australia’s largest provider of rolling-stock solutions to the passenger and freight rail market sectors. UGL’s history dates back more than a century. Today the business has over 3,100 staff in Australia supplying, maintaining and managing rail technology.
At its Ballarat workshop UGL currently employs 130 people - some with nearly 40 years of experience. As a commitment to regional manufacturing and the City of Ballarat, UGL has made a large investment to relocate its entire Ballarat operation to a new, modern facility located in Gregory Street West, Alfredton. This facility has approximately 12,000 m2 of undercover workshop space. The layout of this new site has benefitted from the implementation of 5S and Lean manufacturing principles. The facility offers extensive train overhaul, refurbishment and fit out capabilities, as well as general equipment overhaul, manufacture and heavy engineering services to rail and non-rail customers. It has been designed to allow for future expansion which can make greater use of the skills and knowledge of the regional workforce.
The fit out of 114 X’Trapolis passenger cars for MTM’s Melbourne suburban train network was completed on time and on budget in early 2012 at UGL’s previous Ballarat site.
UGL supports local businesses and jobs in Ballarat and many community initiatives including the local Christmas Food Drive, the Community Food Bus and United Way. UGL is continuing its tradition of heavy engineering manufacture and assembly in Ballarat. It is proud to be associated with the Ballarat region.
UGL Rail’s Ballarat site offers extensive overhaul, refurbishment and fit out capabilities as well as component overhaul, manufacturing and engineering services. It has heavy engineering capability and can provide services to rail and non-rail customers.
