The Committee for Ballarat Peter Doherty Science Award is for year 9 students of Western Victoria attending Ballarat government secondary schools.
This is the fourth year that the Award has been offered and was presented to the winners last night at the awards ceremony. The Award is an initiative if the Committee for Ballarat and was created to encourage excellence in scientific thought and activity in State secondary colleges and the community.
The Award was awarded for a science- based project during the course of the year 9-10 studies whish is:
Professor Peter Doherty shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1996 with Swiss colleague Rolf Zinkernagel for their discovery of how the immune system recognises virus-infected cells. He was Australian of the year in 1997. Professor Peter Doherty's intention in creating this prize is to encourage excellence in scientific thought and activity in State colleges and the community.
